Shred Station CT - April Newsletter

Did you know that here at Shred Station, 100% of our shredded paper and other material is recycled and used to make common household paper products that you can repurchase off the store shelf? This is especially important this month as we celebrate Earth Day tomorrow!

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. The passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other environmental laws soon followed. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, and now today, more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year!

Earth Day goes digital today! Go to www.earthday.org for more details!!

Cheers!

Happy Spring! We are beginning to see some warmer days in the Northeast, as well as more daylight hours. March is a great time to start thinking about spring cleaning!

As you begin your spring cleaning, look around your home and office to see how you can better set them up for easy recycling. For example, is there a place upstairs in your home to put recyclables, like toilet paper rolls, plastic shampoo bottles, and paper? Is your workplace’s lunchroom set up for easy recycling for paper, glass, plastics, and aluminum?

Just a few things to think about as warmer weather approaches!

Cheers!

And finally, did you know that since 1888, George Washington’s Farewell Address has been read aloud in the U.S. Senate on February 22nd, which is his actual birthday? He was born on February 22, 1732.

Welcome to 2022! Did you know that January is “Get Organized” month?

Every January, the Association of Professional Organizers sponsors “Get Organized” month. Studies show that, on average, individuals waste up to an hour a day searching for things that they’ve misplaced. Use this month to think about how organized you are and what help you might need to get organized.

Here are a couple of tips for getting organized:

  • Clean out old paperwork & shred anything not tax-related.
  • Keep tax-related documents in one place since tax season is right around the corner.
  • Put all of your bills in one designated location until you have a chance to review them.

Happy Organizing!

The leaves have started to fall, the weather is getting colder, and October is here!

On Monday, we celebrated Columbus Day, and later this month is Halloween. Here are some interesting facts about each of these holidays:

Columbus discovered America in 1492. He originally set sail on August 3, 1492, but had trouble with the ships, stopping at the Canary Islands for a month. Also, he did not land on the U.S. mainland. He landed on an island in the Caribbean. While many believe he landed on San Salvador, there is still debate on which island he originally landed.

Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

Happy Halloween!

Cheers!

Now that all of the school supplies have been bought and kids are back in school, we start to notice a change in the weather as fall approaches.

Did you ever wonder exactly what the September equinox is? Yesterday on the 22nd, the September equinox occurred. There are two equinoxes every year – in September and March – when the sun shines directly on the Equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal.

The September equinox occurs the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s Equator – from north to south. This happens either on September 22, 23, or 24 every year. In the Northern Hemisphere, the September equinox marks the start of fall. Enjoy the next several weeks of apple picking and beautiful fall foliage!

Cheers!

Ahhh, the lazy days of summer…Now that we are in August, enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

Did you know that August was originally named Sextilis because it was the 6th month of what was then a 10-month calendar? It was renamed in 8BC in honor of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. He chose the month of Sextilis to become ‘August’ because that was the time of year that he conquered Egypt, among other countries.

Happy Summer! We hope you had a wonderful 4th of July and are enjoying the warm weather!

Here are some fun facts for July:

  • July is named after Roman dictator Julius Caesar (100 BC –44 BC). With the help of Sosigenes, Caesar developed the precursor to the Gregorian calendar we use today.
  • On July 14th each year, people in France, parts of North America, and elsewhere celebrate La Fête Nationale or Le Quatorze (14th) Juillet. Known as Bastille Day outside of France, the holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which ignited the French Revolution.
  • July is an exciting month for stargazing and bright planets. Both Jupiter and Saturn will reach their closest point to Earth and be at their brightest.
  • July is National Watermelon Month – yum!
