Shred Station CT - August Newsletter

Ahhh, the lazy days of summer… Now that we are in August, enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

Did you know that August was originally named Sextilis because it was the 6th month of what was then a 10-month calendar? It was renamed in 8BC in honor of Augustus, the first Roman Emperor. He chose the month of Sextilis to become ‘August’ because that was the time of year that he conquered Egypt, among other countries.

Cheers!

Summer is almost here! This year’s summer solstice is on June 20, when summer officially begins.

During the summer solstice, the sun travels the longest path along the sky that it will all year. What does this actually mean for us? It will actually be the longest day of the year, with more sunlight than any other day — 15 to 17 hours, depending on where you are!

What’s your favorite activity during the summer? Do you like to go to the beach? The park? Have family barbecues and ice cream? With the warm summer temperatures and abundant sunshine, make sure you get outside and enjoy it all!

Cheers!

When May begins each year, spring fever hits for many of us. The weather starts to improve, flowers bloom, and we celebrate Mother’s Day. Another very important holiday in May is Memorial Day, which is celebrated every year, always on the last Monday in May.

This special day, formerly known as Decoration Day, commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and honor those who have died for our country.

Enjoy the long weekend coming up, and please take a few minutes to remember those who have died for our country!

Cheers!

Did you know that here at Shred Station, 100% of our shredded paper and other material is recycled and used to make common household paper products that you can repurchase off the store shelf? This is especially important this month as we celebrate Earth Day today!

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. The passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other environmental laws soon followed. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, and now today, more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year!

Earth Day goes digital today! Go to – www.earthday.org for more details!!

Happy Spring! We are beginning to see some warmer days in the Northeast, as well as more daylight hours. March is a great time to start thinking about spring cleaning!

As you begin your spring cleaning, look around your home and office to see how you can better set them up for easy recycling. For example, is there a place upstairs in your home to put recyclables, like toilet paper rolls, plastic shampoo bottles, and paper? Is your workplace’s lunchroom set up for easy recycling for paper, glass, plastics, and aluminum?

Just a few things to think about as warmer weather approaches!

Cheers!

We hope you enjoyed your day off on the 17th to celebrate President’s Day!

Here are some February Fun Facts, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac:

  • February is the only month to have a length of less than 30 days. Though it’s usually 28 days, February is 29 days in leap years. Don’t forget that 2020 is a leap year!
  • January and February were the last 2 months added to the Roman calendar in 713 BC. Originally, winter was considered a month-less period.
  • Originally, February was made the last month of the calendar year, but eventually was moved to its place as the second month in 450 BC.

And finally, did you know that since 1888, George Washington’s Farewell Address has been read aloud in the U.S. Senate on February 22nd, which is his actual birthday? He was born on February 22, 1732.

See you again in March!

Cheers!

Welcome to 2020!

Did you know that January is “Get Organized” month?

Every January, the Association of Professional Organizers sponsors “Get Organized” month. Studies show that, on average, individuals waste up to an hour a day searching for things that they’ve misplaced. Use this month to think about how organized you are and what help you might need to get organized.

Here are a couple of tips for getting organized:

  • Clean out old paperwork & shred anything not tax-related.
  • Keep tax-related documents in one place since tax season is right around
    the corner.
  • Put all of your bills in one designated location until you have a chance to review them.

Happy Organizing!

The leaves have started to fall, the weather is getting colder, and October is here! On Monday, we celebrated Columbus Day, and later this month is Halloween. Here are some interesting facts about each of these holidays:
  • Columbus discovered America in 1492. He originally set sail on August 3, 1492, but had trouble with the ships, stopping at the Canary Islands for a month. Also, he did not land on the U.S. mainland. He landed on an island in the Caribbean. While many believe he landed on San Salvador, there is still debate on which island he originally landed.
  • Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.
Happy Halloween!
