Shred Station CT - September Newsletter
Now that all of the school supplies have been bought and kids are back in school, we start to notice a change in the weather as fall approaches. Did you ever wonder exactly what the September equinox is? On Monday the 23rd, the September equinox will occur. There are two equinoxes every year – in September and March – when the sun shines directly on the Equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal.
The September equinox occurs the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator, which is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s Equator – from north to south. This happens either on September 22, 23, or 24 every year. In the Northern Hemisphere, the September equinox marks the start of fall. Enjoy the next several weeks of apple picking and beautiful fall foliage!
Cheers!

Welcome to summer! This year’s summer solstice is today, so summer has officially started.
During the summer solstice, the sun travels the longest path along the sky that it will all year. What does this actually mean for us? It will actually be the longest day of the year, with more sunlight than any other day — 15 to 17 hours, depending on where you are!
What’s your favorite activity during the summer? Do you like to go to the beach? The park? Have family barbeques and ice cream? With the warm summer temperatures and abundant sunshine, make sure you get outside and enjoy it all!
Cheers!

When May begins each year, spring fever hits for many of us. The weather starts to improve, flowers bloom, and we celebrate Mother’s Day. Another very important holiday in May is Memorial Day, which is celebrated every year, always on the last Monday in May.
This special day, formerly known as Decoration Day, commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and honor those who have died for our country. Others also choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on Memorial Day weekend. This weekend is also traditionally seen as the start of the summer season. So enjoy the long weekend at the end of the month, and please take a few minutes to remember those who have died for our country!
Cheers!

Did you know that here at Shred Station, 100% of our shredded paper and other material is recycled and used to make common household paper products that you can repurchase off the store shelf? This is especially important this month as we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd!
The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. The passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other environmental laws soon followed. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, and now today, more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year!

Happy Spring!
We are beginning to see some slightly warmer days in the Northeast, as well as more daylight hours. March is a great time
to start thinking about spring cleaning!
As you begin your spring cleaning, look around your home and office to see how you can better set them up for easy recycling. For example, is there a place upstairs in your home to put recyclables, like toilet paper rolls, plastic shampoo bottles, and paper? Is your workplace’s lunchroom set up for easy recycling for paper, glass, plastics, and aluminum?
Just a few things to think about as warmer weather approaches!
Cheers!

- Originally, February was made the last month of the calendar year, but eventually was moved to its place as the second month in
450 BC.
And finally, did you know that since 1888, George Washington’s Farewell Address has been read aloud in the U.S. Senate on February 22nd, which is his actual birthday? He was born on February 22, 1732.

Welcome to 2019!
Did you know that January is “Get Organized” month?
Every January, the Association of Professional Organizers sponsors “Get Organized” month. Studies show that, on average, individuals waste up to an hour a day searching for things that they’ve misplaced, so use this month to think about how organized you are and what help you might need to get organized!
Here are a couple of tips for getting organized:
- Clean out old paperwork & shred anything not tax-related.
- Keep tax-related documents in one place since tax season is right around the corner.
- Put all of your bills in one designated location until you have a chance to review them.
Happy Organizing!
