The leaves have started to fall, the weather is getting colder, and October is here! Do you remember the poem that began like this?

In fourteen hundred ninety-two,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue…

Last week we celebrated Columbus Day. Here are some interesting facts that you may not have thought about since grade school:

  • Columbus discovered America in 1492. He originally set sail on August 3, 1492, but had trouble with the ships, stopping at the Canary Islands for a month.
  • He travelled with 3 ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
  • While Columbus was an Italian, he could not find funding in Italy, so he turned to the King of Spain who ultimately provided the the funding he needed.
  • Columbus did not land on the U.S. mainland. He landed on an island in the Caribbean. While many believe he landed on San Salvador, there is still debate on which island he originally landed.

And we can’t forget about the other holiday we celebrate at the end of October…

Happy Halloween!

Cheers!

Now that all of the school supplies have been bought and kids are back in school, we start to notice a change in the weather as fall approaches. Did you ever wonder exactly what the September equinox is? On Saturday the 22nd, the September equinox will occur. There are two equinoxes every year – in September and March – when the sun shines directly on the Equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal.

The September equinox occurs the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s Equator – from north to south. This happens either on September 22, 23, or 24 every year. In the Northern Hemisphere, the September equinox marks the start of fall. Enjoy the next several weeks of apple picking and beautiful fall foliage!

Cheers!

Fun Fact

The full moon that falls near the September equinox is called the harvest moon – it’s so bright that farmers can work much later traditionally.
